I'm so proud of this crew! Even with assessments, holiday festivities, and weather changes these guys worked hard to practice lines, learn new vocabulary, and have the courage to read in front of a group of adults! I'm excited for the second half of our year together. We have already grown so much! Please be sure to praise your child for their efforts and compliment the changes you have seen this year. We are more fluid readers, faster mathematicians, and better problem solvers. We have demonstrated more independence and self discipline. We have so much to be proud of and our potential for more growth is awesome!

Don't miss out on the fun! You have earned a seat on the Polar Express. Bring your blue ticket back to school on Tuesday, December 19th and let's celebrate how much we have grown this year!
Parents, Help your child be responsible for their ticket that went home in their Smokie folder. Encourage them to put it in a safe place and remind them to bring it to school on Tuesday. We will wear our pajamas, board the train, and enjoy sweet, warm treats as we watch The Polar Express! It might have been a chilly walk over, but we really enjoyed the experience. Our three high school leaders were friendly and fun! We loved asking them questions about their "favorites" and talking to them about them about high school. Thank you MHS Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy for hosting our 1st graders on a fun Polar Express ride. We loved listening to Jacob share the story and enjoying the delicious cookies and hot cocoa. Your do-good December project was mmm, mmm, good! Thank you for planning a fun game for us too! BINGO!
Thank you Coach Hunt and Rebel football players for coming to our room to talk about rules and laws. We loved hearing about the rules of football and the consequences when they are not followed. Thank you for sharing your favorite parts of the game and how different rules apply to your different positions. We liked hearing about how you follow rules on and off the football field. We also appreciated your suggestions for our rules and laws STEM challenge!
Today, Coach Placeres came to see us from Maryville College! This week, we are talking about rules and laws covering our SS standard TN SS 1.28. Coach talked to us about the rules he sets for his basketball players and how those rules can apply to our classroom too. Coach said his players have to come to practice READY. They have to be on time and prepared to play. At school, we have to be on time and ready to learn. He shared a quote he shares with his team. "Discipline yourself so others won't have to." He also talked about being COURAGEOUS. We take risks in our classroom and need courage to speak up and participate. Coach expects more than basketball from his players. They work on character. They are encouraged to BE KIND. We talked about what that looks like at school and in our classroom. His players have to PAY ATTENTION. Ask your child about "one clap, two clap". Why does coach use this with his players? Ask your child how they can show their teacher they are paying attention. What great lessons shared with our "team" today! 1, 2, 3, GO TEAM!
Thank you Coach Placeres! Coach has also added Sam Houston Elementary to the guest list for MC basketball. You and your child can attend a game for FREE. Simply say you are with SHE. Wow, Thanks Coach! The Scots have a home game this Saturday at 2:00pm if you are able to attend. In our story this week, Fred created stripes and spots on the jungle animals. We explored paints and colors to see if we could create three different shades of green. How did your child make the color lighter? How did they create a darker shade? We also tried making our own play doh! Your child had to work with a team to create a play doh recipe using only flour, salt, and water. Some groups had a runny or sticky substance. Others made a dough that actually held the shape of a ball and didn't stick to their hands! We might have made a mess, but learning and growing is messy sometimes!
