This week, we are designing our own insects. We know that insects have three body parts, six legs and two antennae. We also know about special features, wings, and exoskeletons. Can we use all that we know to design an insect?

This week, we read The Kite with Frog and Toad. We designed our own kites using various materials. We made a sketch and labeled our materials. We built the design and are excited to test our creations on a windy day!
Dancing, jumping, spinning, gymnastics, soccer, building, drawing, and MORE! After reading What Can You Do?, we showed our special talents.
Today's competition started in Photo Booth using the word FUNNY! We worked in teams of three and added -er and -est to the base word funny when we compared pictures created in Photo Booth on our iPads. We had a hilarious time distorting our images. Check out of of these and use the words funny, funnier, and funniest to describe them. Don't forget to change the y to an i before adding the ending! This week we read The Dot and studied pointillism. We learned about various artists who have used this style of design. We each designed a picture using only dots and then decided as a team which design to further develop. We took our chosen design and enlarged it on big graph paper using die-cut dots. We named our masterpieces and used the number and color of dots to practice double digit math...we even did regrouping! Check out our work! You can see our artist writing displayed in the hallway with these masterpieces as well!
So…. there might be another app request at your house after today! We used iMovie to create a trailer for an American documentary about US symbols, history, and monuments. We have used padlet and library resources to research various memorials and important symbols of America. Some students chose to work with a partner while others chose to work independently. The results were impressive! Check out these examples:

What is your favorite US symbol and why? What did you learn new this week about American history? Would you like to make another trailer?
This week, we used an app called YakIt to practice our high frequency words. Several of the kids were very excited about it. If you would like to use this app at home, it can be found in the app store under iPhone only. It does work on an iPad, but it is designed for a phone. We took pictures of different stuffed characters and had them use our sight words in sentences. Your child had to think of a sentence and record their voice. Check out this sample!
