In your child's Smokie folder, you will find a flyer with instructions to sign up for Seesaw. This is a digital portfolio. Your child will upload work through this app from their school device. You can receive email messages to notify you of new items in their portfolio. We have already submitted an item for you to view! Are you impressed with our 1st grade technology skills? I did not use this resource last year and am excited to hear your thoughts and feedback.

Sometimes you don't know the answer until you try it! Today, we made boats out of a piece of aluminum foil. We made predictions about how many pennies our boat would hold. Then, we tested our boats. Can you believe we had boats hold more than 100 pennies?
Our STEM project today was hoop gliders. We chose our straw, paper, and design for our glider. We had 12 minutes to design, build, test, and IMPROVE our gliders. We tried lots of different styles and designs! The priority for this lesson was "redesign". We have to be willing to change and always be looking for improvements!
Today, we learned and practiced several new skills on the iPads. We are working through a checklist of skills that will be important for us to use throughout the year. We learned how to power on and off, change the volume, and close running apps. We also got to practice opening and using the app Doddle Buddy. We had fun drawing, writing, typing , and stamping in this app. It's like a digital etch-a-sketch (you shake to erase!) This is a free app if you would like to add it to your child's personal device at home! The focus was Teamwork! Today, we worked in teams of 3 to build a tower. The goal was to big the tallest free-standing tower in 15 minutes using only 15 pieces of spaghetti and 3 feet of tape. The purpose of this lesson was not a focus on engineering. We were working on respectful interactions with our peers. We had to collaborate and communicate respectfully. We learned we will not always win, but we can't stop trying! Congratulations Alex, Bryce, and Jess for successfully building a 17 and a half inch free-standing tower. Congratulations Benjamin for continuing to work until the timer went off and not getting frustrated when your tower fell. Congratulations Elayna for using positive language to encourage your team. "Don't give up. We still have time." Congratulations Leah for remaining positive when your team ran out of supplies. Congratulation Saisei for offering multiple design ideas to your team. Two teams also built 10 and a half inch free-standing towers. Great job!
The first day back can feel LOOOONNNGGGG when they are used to summer vacation. I think some may fall asleep on the way home! We had a fun-filled day. Recess was very hot, so we stopped for a Popsicle break. I loved spending time with these smiling faces today!
Class lists will be posted Monday at 3:00pm at the front of Sam Houston. At 5 o' clock, the doors will open for students and parents. All families need to go to the gym first to view a short video and recieve a RUP document. The video will play three times so everyone has an opportunity to view it. It is mandatory for ALL parents and students to watch nd understand the RUP. After the video, we invite families to visit clasrooms and meet teachers. You may always drop off supplies and pick up additional paperwork. I can't wait to meet my new friends! |
