Thank you to all our wonderful parents for donating items, helping with setup/cleanup, and managing games for our fall party! An extra special thank you to Carol Barrett for all her hard work planning and organizing the event…all with a baby on her hip! The kids had a blast. Lots of great treats and 5 different games to play. What was your child's favorite part? Monster sack races, witch hat ring toss, bubble gum warts, mummy bowling, or the eyeball bounce? We had parent volunteers running the halls and corralling mummy pins on the carpet! We couldn't have done it without you! Thank you! The families at Sam Houston are what make our school so great.

We had a great time learning more about Dr. Seuss this week. Ask your child what his real name was. We read a short biography about his life and also enjoyed several of his books. We even had a Cat in the Hat math problem to solve. What kind of mischief did Thing 1 and Thing 2 cause?
We are working in teams of 3-4 to create a clay animation using the app Koma Koma. First we had to create a skeleton using paperclips. Then we covered the clips with clay. next we wrote a rhyming script (just like Dr. Seuss!) Over the next two days we will work on editing our script and taking pictures of our clay figure acting it out. What will your child's character have to do?
We have been selected to create the second annual CANstructure for Sam Houston! We will use our STEM minds to build a structure out of can foods. We will collect cans November 3rd- November 7th and start building on November 10th. The judging will take place on November 14th. The competition will be fun, but the important part of this experience will be our community assistance. All collected food will go to families in need throughout our school system and donated to The Food Connection in our area. We will have tables set up at the front of the school during the week of November 3rd to collect food donations. In honor of our study of Dr. Seuss this week, we will celebrate his imagination on Friday with Wacky Tacky Day. Wear your craziest clothes, style your hair in a weird way, and use your imagination like Dr. Seuss!
*no costumes please Today, we created a water xylophone. We each had an opportunity to play it too! Ask your child how we changed the sound. Ask them to compare a real xylophone to a water xylophone. You can watch our performance by clicking the link below!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00sJE6g60kA While we are reading A Musical Day, we are making instruments just like our characters. Yesterday we made drums. Today we made pipes! We cut straws at different lengths, positioned them from longest to shortest, and gently blew along the tops. We recorded our sounds using the app MicPro! We still need more tubes for every child to be able to make a guitar. Do you have any recyclables at your house?
The Maryville City Schools Foundation is hosting the 2014 Rebel Run and Walk 5k Saturday, November 1st. You can go to https://runsignup.com/Race/TN/Maryville/RebelRun5K2014 for more information or to sign up online. The race will start at Maryville High School and end on the 50 yard line of the football field. Our class is helping to promote the run at Sam Houston. All students, families, and staff members are encouraged to participate. We want all Sam Houston runners to wear their black Smokies t-shirts and represent SHE with pride! Today we made posters to hang within the school, and we will be making morning announcements to help get SHE excited for November 1st! My family will be running and I hope to see you there!
We soaked the seeds from our class pumpkin over night then chose our favorite to plant. We are using a ziploc bag hung in a window with a moist paper towel. We had to decision which seed to use, which type of paper towel, and where to hang our bag. Some of us wrapped our seed in the towel. Some laid it flat in the bag. We will see which seeds grow! In years past, I have been able to transfer a root and sprout to a soiled pot. We have grown a long vine and even seen the yellow flower bloom. Fingers crossed for another successful experience! |
