While we were working with solid figures, we explored a new app called Tap Tap Blocks. One of our standards requires us to make new shapes using 3D shapes. We worked with a partner. One friends would build with linking cubes and the other would create the same design on the app. We could spin, twist, and turn our creation to see it from all angles. We had a fun time learning more about solid figures!

This week, we were presented with a problem...Bears from the Smoky Mountains were invading our campus. They did research to find out why. We discovered open trash bins were the issue. We then researched solutions. You will notice our discovery in these projects. My class was then challenged to produce an Adobe Voice convincing Dr. Winstead to upgrade our trash cans at SHE. We are eager to hear his response!
Research was conducted through books and videos posted to a padlet wall and an article in the app Subtext. Photographs for the Adobe Voice were accessed through a different padlet wall where students learned to save images to their camera roll and upload in Adobe. We are very familiar with padlet and Adobe but we learned new tech skills accessing Subtext and moving pictures to our device. Proud moments this week in 1st grade! We have also been practicing opinion and informative writing. There were no guidelines on how long the project needed to be, simply that they needed to have an introduction, state the problem and defend the issue, present a solution, and have a closing. Not only did they check out books, but they learned about photo illustrator Nic Bishop. They explored his work and talked about the details and challenges of his job. Mrs. Thomas organized a great experience for her students by borrowing several classroom pets for the library. Our class took pictures of these pets and produced an Adobe Voice about Nic Bishop and his exciting career. Thank you Mrs. Thomas for your enthusiasm and creativity in library. Check it out... http://voice.adobe.com/v/HEGyPzgqgcw Thank you to so many of our parents who were able to come to our performance of The ABC's of the First Thanksgiving. They were a little nervous and excited. If you were unable to make it, check out this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7eTn6m3vgo We are growing so much and developing into great readers. We will present our Thanksgiving show to some of the 1st grade classes next week. This experience gives us an opportunity to mature and gain confidence. Presenting in front of peers is usually more challenging than facing a parent audience. Thanks to all who brought in donations. We had a delicious time learning about solid figures! Ask your child to find a solid figure/3D shape at home and post it to our blog! We are working on rectangular prisms, cubes, spheres, and cylinders. It is no easy task to stack 10 cans on top of each other without support or level floors, not to mention the dented cans! Whew! But we did it! We labeled each key on the keyboard (some keys you do not realize are even there!) We will add a few extra touches tomorrow morning before the judging starts and risk a group photo around the cans after the judging is complete! ha
We love our 1:1 classroom and want to share ourexperiences with others. What is your child's favorite part about our classroom iPads? This week, we are reading A Cupcake Party. In this story, Fritz prepares a party for his friends. They enjoy cupcakes together. The Palmer family is bringing cupcakes for us to enjoy. Our job is creating the party games. Mrs. Barrett did a wonderful job planning games for our fall party. What kind of games do you think we will plan? We are working in small teams with various supplies to build challenging party games. We even have to write the instructions on how to play. Check out what we have done so far...
This week we are collecting cans to get ready for the structure we need to build. We need 400 cans to build the designed structure. You can help by donating and making sure your child is ready to collect on their designated day. Thanks to these smiling faces, we are already off to a great start!
