What kind of vehicle would you design for a desert, city, railroad or snowy wilderness? These teams chose 5 different materials to build with. They got 20 of each item for a total of 100 pieces. They have been working together to design a vehicle to match their location. How would you use coffee filters, lima beans, and straws? They are getting creative, defending their choices, and working on collaborating with peers. They are not allowed to destroy or cut their materials, but they are able to tape or glue them together. (Mrs. Buffie and I are in charge of hot glue but they must tell us specifically what and where to glue!) Some of the biggest challenges are team agreement, staying on task, and getting your vehicle to match your imagination! I love to see them THINK!

Happy 100 Days! Today, we celebrated 100 days of learning in 1st grade! We also got a little CRAZY with 100 challenges, 100 questions, 100 dollars to spend, and 100 years of aging! Check out our aging class by following this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcyU4rCzB-k Our class voted on Leah to represent us for the key of Commitment. You have to be committed to get work completed and grow in your learning. Way to go Leah! You have shown your commitment to good behavior and improved work.
This week, we are learning about the moon, planets, and our sun. In our story, we see how astronauts use tools in space. We have also watched a short video about the types of tools they use and why they are different from our tools. Ask your child why astronauts can't use the same tools we do. Our story talks about using a robo-arm to collect a moon rock to bring back to Earth to show others. We are using this part of our story to be engineers and build a robo arm. We started construction yesterday using cardboard, tubes, tape, spoons, forks, and MORE tape! We continued building today, tested our designs, and began redesigning and improving. We have had a few successful attempts but we have not had a team with each member collecting a rock. Hopefully, we will improve our robo arms and be able to have successful missions on the moon!
We are preparing to go to the moon next week! We will explore the moon, planets, space, and space exploration. Today, a representative from the MUSE came to talk to us about the planets, sun, and moon. We learned about the name of the planets, what the sun is made of, constellations, and how craters are formed. Next week, we will design a robo-arm to collect a moon rock safely from our space shuttle. If you have cardboard tubes of any size we would greatly appreciate your donations!
