The state of Tennessee issued new Social Studies standards for 1st grade. Our new standards include legends, songs, and folktales of Native Americans from this region. This week, we are learning the Cherokee legend of Why the Trees Lose their Leaves. We will be performing this legend for the other first grade classes on Friday and learning about the legends they studied. We will hear 6 Native legends in all. Your child help create props for our show today and will practice parts and lines tomorrow. This is great practice for our 1st grade program later in the year. Ask your child about this legend and their part it teaching it to the other 1st grade classes. This link will take you to our legend: http://www.firstpeople.us/FP-Html-Legends/WhyTheTreesLoseTheirLeaves-Cherokee.html

Yay! I'm so happy to hear that. Our legend is interesting and the props we made are simple but fun. You would not believe how fast kids can glue down a half a bag of cotton balls! And we have some great engineer minds- I gave them orange paper and said, "make bird beaks." They were finished in 2 minutes! Excited for our play tomorrow.
